Richmond Upon Thames College

• The challenge:

  REL Building Services designed and delivered the M&E package for a new £34 million campus at Richmond upon Thames College (RuTC).

  The state-of-the-art building, which is targeted to achieve a BREEAM Excellent rating, features five floors of new facilities spanning 161,000 sq ft, including business incubation space, a 160-seat theatre, art gallery, restaurant, spa, and learning environments comprising advanced digital technology.

• Project summary:

  • Extensive design work during the scheme’s pre-construction stage.
  • Early engagement with the project team, including extensive BIM modelling, ensured the M&E solution could meet all aspects of the brief.
  • Design and installation of all M&E services for advanced commercial and educational facilities, including a mechanical ventilation system, comprising full comfort cooling.
  • Building services, including ventilation and smoke ventilation systems, had to be fully integrated into an unusually shaped atrium which takes up nearly a third of the building.
  • The solution included 228 photovoltaic panels, a 50kW air source heat pump, an advanced Building Management System (BMS) and more than 1,800 data points.
